windows are opening partially split over two screens (vertical placement of displays) , pcmanfm-qt moves on changing device/partition/lower-down-folder (to be over display boundary), some windows maximize to using only ~1/8th vertical of display

Bug Description

many windows are opening partially offscreen, some are opening with almost no vertical component (thus needing stretching out), some warp (move) on selecting new items. dual-monitor setup

--

background
my monitor setup is strange, monitor1 is top, monitor2 is below & slightly left

this was first noticed with pcmanfm-qt which would 'jump' or 'warp' (star trek warp) to a new location not fully on either monitor & sometimes partially off-screen when I selected a new partition (device in left pane) see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pcmanfm-qt/+bug/1804329

to aid in that bug report, I started taking screen-captures which caused lximage-qt to load, I maximized the window expecting it to go fullscreen on monitor2, instead of using all of monitor2 it would use full width but only about 1/8th of height of the monitor (ie. very little vertical).

i started `ubuntu-bug pcmanfm-qt` for aforementioned pcmanfm-qt warp issue, it opened firefox which opened squashed on top of monitor2 like lximage-qt was...

i wanted my hw specs I list in qa-test reporting (on another system so I was going to ssh to it) so opened terminal (ctrl+alt+t) and qterminal opens on monitor1 but with more than half off-screen

** issues

- windows are strangely behaving when I maximize on monitor2 (lximage-qt, firefox, qterminal etc. they all go full-width bu tonly use 1/8th of vertical space of the monitor

- some windows are opening off-screen, esp. qterminal using ctrl+alt+t

- some windows warp on some functions & end up, part displayed on one monitor, some on my other monitor and parts on neither (off-screen); pcmanfm-qt

- even adding attachments in firefox can

If I use maximize on monitor1 all behavior is as expected. I'm getting strange behavior only on my second monitor for maximize (which is my preferred for this setup with). It's probably appearing off-screen because my monitors aren't aligned perfectly (my strange setup).

Even on entering `ubuntu-bug` for this lp.repot, firefox (which was already open & displayed fully on monitor2 (lower) - the firefox window warped or jumped so the top was on monitor1, the bulk of it on monitor2 and part now offscreen.

lots of screen images

firefox was already opened & fully displayed on monitor2 (bottom)
I entered 'ubuntu-bug' as seen in qterminal window on monitor1 (top), I selected 1 (launch firefox) and it warped/jumped my firefox window to be between screens (top on monitor1, bottom or bulk on monitor2, and now part of it off-screen)

i hit CTRL+ALT+T to open a terminal - this is how it opens..

please note: My display only shows the right half of the display - the panel menu icon at bottom of monitor1 (my top screen) is far LEFT of my display.

Walter on #lubuntu-devel suggested centering new windows; that would I believe fix issue providing it also affected re-drawn windows; eg. the firefox window in last attachment was already opened thus not new, just re-drawn...

some more pictures with regards pcmanfm-qt can be seen via https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pcmanfm-qt/+bug/1804329

on those you could see it post changing position (after selecting a different partition/device) and be part on one monitor1, mostly on monitor2 & sometimes off-screen. I won't upload here too.

As stated - I only got this with pcmanfm-qt when the window was on monitor2 when I changed 'device'.

CTRL+ALT+T is currently opening a terminal on monitor1 (fully on screen), I don't know what caused it to stop opening it top left (part off-screen), but I haven't picked a pattern/trigger that causes the term to open top-left(half-off-screen) instead of fully-visible like it is now. I've tried clicking pcmanfm-qt windows, firefox on either screen, or backgruond and can't pick what causes it to misbehave and open top-left & half-off-screen like my attach pictured, but it was before.. Back then it was failing-every-time, right now it's passing-every-time...

once I have adjusted screens to match my setup (only slightly different to hp in prior comments; this system is just to right & has a larger bottom monitor so alignment mostly the same)

I hit ctrl+alt+T and result is as per attachment (mostly off-screen)

as per prior screens; the left of [top] screen can be seen via the menu-button-on-panel (top screen, or just above middle of picture vertically)

(when I'm next using my installed 19.04 I'll look there too)

I finished the QA-test on my d960, and rebooted to my installed 19.04, logging in with lubuntu/lxqt

My setup has the panel on the bottom of monitor2 (where I'd want it) but also a sign that it's modified. My install was back with 17.10 (either Ubuntu or Ubuntu-Mate), but I could verify some of the same issues described above (I can't even drag qterminal into sight as it doesn't have any showing on top monitor).. :(

this session I've configured two monitors, one directly above the other.

as a result; none of the window opens off-screen, but the top of it is on my top screen (monitor0), and the bulk of it opens on monitor1 (bottom).

the same occurred first three times I opened pcmanfm-qt, then for a bunch of times it opened middle of monitor0 (top display), then I tried moving cursor down (panel is at bottom of top screen) and it opened with title-bar on monitor0 & rest at top of monitor1

(this is the same x86_64 daily image - it has NOT been updated)

for second case (hitting next/prev on lower monitor), the top title bar & second menu-line appear on top display, the video itself & controls appearing on the second lower monitor/display. sometimes though the menu line is not seen (hidden by top screen menu-panel?)?field.comment=if playing vids (using vlc) on top monitor0/display0 - no issues when it goes to next/prev vid
