this bug is alive on Lubuntu 12.10 and 13.04, 32 bits, both fresh install.
workaround from comment #6 works, but it may look strange for new users/new comers see that some applications "do not work" out of the box as expected.

or by "it just works" mean the OS works, but some applications we provide by default do not?
