Bug Description

I just installed Ubuntu 11.10. I have Windows 7 installed on one drive, and Ubuntu installed on another. If I last used Ubuntu, when I try to load Windows 7, my computer resets. Sometimes it resets in the Windows loading screen, and sometimes I am able to log-in before it resets. This behaviour did not occur prior to installing Ubuntu 11.10, and it did not occur with the last version of Ubuntu I used, which I think was 9.something. After resetting once, I am able to log-in and use Windows 7 without issue.

After resetting, the error message displayed prior to loading grub reads "Warning: System Boot Fail. Your system last boot fail or POST interrupted."

I am using an Asus P5N-D motherboard.

David Sharpe, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

I am sorry, but I do not have time to test the latest development release of Ubuntu. I realise this bug report is of limited use if I am unwilling to perform additional tests, but I do not currently have more time to contribute. Thank you for your consideration.

p.s. The workaround, black listing nv_tco, seems to have eliminated the symptom.
