Bug Description

My system is updated every couple of days. After a recent upgrade that included a new kernel, my system fails to boot up. If I select the previous kernel from grub boot menu, everything is fine.

I can't really see where the boot process fails. Only visible symptom is the led behind my caps lock key starts flashing after several seconds (dell studio xps m1340 laptop).

Donald Parker, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please report the results following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelBoot ? As well, please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Wow! I'm not sure I am comfortable doing all that. This is my working personal laptop - not some test system I am OK to experiment with and trash.
I'll try the kernel debug boot thing but I don't feel good about installing development releases. I'll look into the option of creating a new "test linux" partition that I can play with without screwing up my main working system. May take a day or two. If you have any pointers for setting this up, that might help. I'm thinking the best way is to not modify the MBR but I need to do some research to figure out how to do this first.

I tried booting per instructions in the kernel debug (removing quiet splash vt.handoff=7 options and setting gfxpayload=ext).

Well a whole lot of stuff whizzed by before my machine hung. Last meaningful thing I saw was something like "running init.d scripts top to bottom" then a ton of entries that meant nothing to me. Last thing printed on the screen of my frozen computer started with this:
[14.968080] [<c|565fdf>]? ....

So I don't know if this is useful. It is meaningless to me. If there is some way to capture all the junk sent to my screen so I can sent it to you, please send instructions.

Joseph asks me to upgrade to 3.0.0-19 but I did say in a previous comment that I had done that, and the bug persists., He specifically asks me to upgrade to 3.0.0-19.32 but all I can tell from the packing info is that I installed 3.0.0-19 - I can't tell which issue of 19 it was. The only way I know to do that is run uname after it is running .... but this whole bug is about the fact that I can even successfully boot it.

After applying updates this morning, which included a new update to kernel 3.0.0-19, my problem has gone away. I'm not sure if the root cause has been diagnosed and fixed or if my symptoms have disappeared for some other reason, but from my perspective, all appears to be good now.
