I'm also observing this problem with my logitech M325 mouse.
Instead of unplugging and re-plugging the USB receiver I'm running the following commands as discussed here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/128345/logitech-m515-does-not-work-after-upgrade-to-12-04

as super user:
modprobe -r hid_logitech_dj
modprobe hid_logitech_dj
