Bug Description

For me the sleep feature stopped working when updating to 10.04 (I remember it very clearly) and it has been broken every since.

It tries to sleep, but it gets stuck somewhere in the process. The screen goes black with a blinking cursor, but nothing more happens.

I've been running "dist-upgrade" ever since I installed Ubuntu 9.04, and was told that might be an issue. So to debug (and rule out any inconsistencies in my install) I've completely removed and re-installed Ubuntu 11.10. But the issue is still there and reproducible every time.

WORKAROUND: unload tmp_tis before suspend. I've added it to the SUSPEND_MODULES list in /etc/pm/config.d/modules.

The bug is still valid for Ubuntu 12.04, I updated and tested it this weekend.

Neither Hibernate nor Suspend works.

AzP, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Regarding your Bug Title, "Unable to sleep/hibernate...", please do not stack multiple problems into one report. Hence, this report will only focus on how this device is not sleeping.

In addition, could you please provide all information noted in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend ?

As well, please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

Oh, sorry if I just supplied lots of "apports". The python script crashed according to its debug output, so I didn't know if it had worked or not..

Here's my dmesg output from a suspend (as described in the debug guide), as well as my lspci.

AzP, please stop being obnoxious.

Despite this, you seem not to understand https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/950296/comments/52 . How "painful" something may seem does not make it any less the next step to move your bug forward. As previously posted to you, doing a bisect from 9.10, the last working version, to 10.04, the first non-working one, is the next step. If the instructions are too difficult, please say so and we can work on finding someone who may do this for you.

AzP (peterasplund) wrote :

Sorry for the sassy comment, but your answer was not much more helpful though. The instructions are not to difficult, but building thousands of kernel commits to pinpoint a specific one do feel like a huge waste of time when someone with knowledge of the subsystem (and the specific driver for my hardware) could check what error I get and see when that part of the code (or parts which might affect it) might have been changed, and what changes were made.
Especially since I would have no idea how well a 2.6.31-kernel would work in an Ubuntu 12.04 system.

However, I do understand that it's quite hard to debug without actually having access to my specific hardware, and I'll gladly help with more information, or testing patches, etc.

AzP, before performing the actions requested of you in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/950296/comments/52 , could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the mainline kernels archive directory daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.7-rc6

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the newest upstream mainline kernel is complete, and if the problem is reproducible, or testing inconclusive, could you please bisect as previously requested? If the problem is fixed in the newest upstream mainline release, please mark this bug Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
