Bug Description

After upgrading to 11.10, the bluetooth dongle (0c10:0000) doesn't work anymore

hciconfig seems to be able to see it:

xxx@xxx:~$ hciconfig
hci0: Type: BR/EDR Bus: USB
BD Address: 00:11:F6:03:81:CE ACL MTU: 120:20 SCO MTU: 0:0
 DOWN
 RX bytes:1086 acl:0 sco:0 events:39 errors:0
 TX bytes:171 acl:0 sco:0 commands:39 errors:0

but hciconfig hci0 up yield a timeout error:

Can't init device hci0: Connection timed out (110)

Extra bluetoothd logs when I run hciconfig hci0 up are as follows:

Mar 6 17:34:30 mythbox1 bluetoothd[21709]: plugins/hciops.c:read_bd_addr_complete() hci0 status 0

Mar 6 17:34:30 mythbox1 bluetoothd[21709]: plugins/hciops.c:update_ext_inquiry_response() hci0

usb-devices for the bluetooth dongle:

and doesn't look like I'm missing any modules.

Please help!

Also, would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.3 kernel[1] (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the other tags). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed by the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream-KERNEL-VERSION'. For example, if kernel version 3.3-rc6 fixed the issue, the tag would be: 'kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.3-rc6'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Joseph,

Tried the previous kernel, and the bluetooth dongle works.

xxx@mythbox1:~$ uname -a
Linux mythbox1 2.6.38-13-generic #54-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jan 3 13:44:52 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Will try upstream kernel now.

More information about the upstream kernel:

I've downloaded the v3.3-rc6 kernels as instructions, dpkg -i it and reboot.

I noticed that there are a few things there weren't working (X, and normal text display were coming up). I ssh-ed into the box and did the hciconfig commands. I noticed the same symptoms as I've reported on existing kernel (timeout error.)

Tommy, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the mainline kernels archive directory daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.7-rc8

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
