I tried kernel:

3.2.0-030200rc4-generic_3.2.0-030200rc4.201112012035_amd64

Vertical scrolling works on the touchpad now.
No touchpad tab in "mouse" preference anymore.

Xinput indicates touchpad is now detected as:
ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse

Alps is no longer in list.
