Bug Description

apport should allow you to file a generic bug report, i had to fudge this just to post it.

I own an Acer Aspire 10.1" AO531h. When I choose restart, it goes through the process till the point where it shuts off, then instead of rebooting, it just hangs, black screen, all the indicator light on the bottom left are lit except the wifi light. . (battery, bluetooth, 3g)

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . If possible, please test the latest release candidate kernel (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the others). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed by the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream-KERNEL-VERSION'. For example, if kernel version 3.1-rc9 fixed and issue, the tag would be: 'kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.1-rc9'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Thanks in advance.

I followed your advice, and installed 3.0.0-12-generic kernel. It still gives me the error on reboot. Hope this helps you...

So, I'd like to say, that I have exactly the same Problem. Using an HP Compac Mini 702EG. Reboot just hangs (dark screen, but laptop still run. Only form to go further is to push the power button for over 5 seconds). On 10.04, 10.10 and 11.04 reboot just worked fine. Tried Kernel 3.0.0-12 and 3.0.0-13. I'm doing to try some mainline Kernels and post back the results.

As in #7, I already tested the system with Ubuntu Kernel 3.0.0-12 and 3.0.0-13. Yesterday I tested the reboot with 3 mainline kernel, and here the results.

The Problem persists with the following mainline kernel (system halts, display is black, but no reboot):

Linux bilbo 3.0.9-030009-generic #201111111635 SMP Fri Nov 11 21:43:52 UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
Linux bilbo 3.1.0-030100rc10-generic #201110200610 SMP Thu Oct 20 10:20:00 UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

With the following Kernel, I could reboot normaly:
Linux bilbo 3.1.1-030101-generic #201111111651 SMP Fri Nov 11 22:00:08 UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Can I help further in any way?

Another info: Using Kernel
Linux bilbo 3.1.1-030101-generic #201111111651 SMP Fri Nov 11 22:00:08 UTC 2011 i686 i686
Don't work always. Sometimes the system still hangs on reboot.

<email address hidden>, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please capture the oops following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Capturing_OOPs ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

This happens to me every time. I am using an Acer Aspire One AO531h running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

Bug reports seem not to matter, being that this happens at the apex between reboot and restart of the machine.

The guys at irc.freenode.org #ubuntu think this might be a problem with processes not terminating properly.

If this is the case, it makes sense. The reboot signal is given, most processes are terminated, but for some reason something just refuses to terminate, leaving the system to hang, waiting for said process to die.

I thought I would mention this, just a possibility.
