Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the release candidate kernel versus the daily build. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the others). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed by the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream-KERNEL-VERSION'. For example, if kernel version 3.1-rc9 fixed and issue, the tag would be: 'kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.1-rc9'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Thanks in advance.

Can somebody help me about this?
It is really very necessary.

My wife has a Philco Notebook PHN 10003, with integrated webcam, that worked fine in Ubuntu 11.04 and 10.10.
After last upgrade, to Ubuntu 11.10, webcam stopped working.
Is there something I can do to solve this problem?
Thank you.

Some more information from my side.
My webcam is external, connected via USB; it has a LED which is activated when the device is operating.
During Ubuntu boot (when the Ubuntu logo is shown, with progress bar on purple background) the LED is on, as it was with 11.04.
The LED goes off when the User selector (lightDM in my case) comes up. Afterwards, the cam is not recognized anymore.

Can you also test the upstream kernel, mentioned in comment #2

This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug report at bugzilla.kernel.org [1]? That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

If you are comfortable with opening a bug upstream, It would be great if you can report back the upstream bug number in this bug report. That will allow us to link this bug to the upstream report.

Joseph, thank you for your support.
I can not test the upstream kernel in my wife's computer, and I'm worried because the solution may not come fast.
It was very difficult to convince her to leave Windows and use Ubuntu, a year ago. Now, there is no way to convince her to make experiences in her personnel laptop.

Webcam is: Bus 002 Device 005: ID 041e:4052 Creative Technology, Ltd Live! Cam Vista IM
Webcam light is ON.

Webcam worked in cheese and skype and googletalk until 11.04 - now not any more.
It also does not work on a brand new fresh install from scratch of 11.10.
All SW says "No device connected".
I tried LD_PRELOAD="/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so" skype and no help.
I installed gtk2-engines-pixbuf - still no help.

I unfortunately am still too "blonde" to handle upstream or kernel issues or bugs so please answer here if there is any help.

Thank you all

Nathalie

@Joseph: I'd like to try posting a bug in kernel bugzilla, but I've not been able to access their website.
I guess the site is having some problem...

Yes, it appears that bugzilla.kernel.org is still unavailable. One alternative would be to report this directly to the subsystem maintainer or to the Linux Kernel Mailing List - <email address hidden>

on the laptop I can enable or disable the webcam with Fn F10.
When I open cheese (or another application) for the first time the webcam works, the second time it does not work!
I must again can activate or deactivate the webcam for it to work again.
is like a rifle-shot, you should reload every time.

This seems to be something really related to oneiric (if coupled kernel or not), for all the cams worked in natty and none works in oneiric, despite of upgrading from 11.04 or install 11.10 from scratch.

Is there any update here?

As this bug is "unassigned", can we hope for a solution? Would be silly to buy a new webcam just because having upgraded the software (and not silly but impossible with all the embedded webcams). Ubuntu claims "it just works! - but it is annoying if with an upgrade "it just does not work" any more...

I am an end user so I have not too much possibilities to do anything relevant here, just cry for help and I hope my crying is heard...

Until there is some solution I deleted oneiric and reinstalled natty on my "production" machine for I need the webcam functionality.

Perhaps one should not stick to the 6-monts-rhytm with "new" releases if in every release there is that much neww that there is always something wrong. Make just one a year but make it working...

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug in the upstream bug tracking system this is a tremendous help. Launchpad has the ability to watch lots of upstream bug trackers and this can be done by following the procedure documented at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Watches. I've added the bug watch for this bug report.

igi, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc1

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
