Bug Description

The X display is not working at all in Ubuntu Oinric 11.10 Beta 2

I've tried both ways:
- try it from USB - it boots, I can hear the music once it gets to the login window, after boot - but the display is not working at all
- I've tried to install it, but I can't see the install steps, because the X is not working

The X worked fain in 11.04 Natty on my Sony Vaio VPCY2

Brad Figg (brad-figg) wrote : Test with newer development kernel (3.0.0-12.19)

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

Tried OpenSuse 12.1 beta today, and the internal monitor works out of the box. (however, Setting screen brightness and using wifi doesn't work)

The wifi is working after blacklisting (removing) acer-wmi module.

What kernel does the OpenSuse 12.1 beta have ?
Does the suspend/hibernate works with this OpenSuse, too ?

OpenSuse beta uses kernel 3.1.0rc7-3. Suspend does work. since i'm running it from a usb stick i can not test hibernating.
I also tried the most recent fedora beta, same problem as opensuse.
(both 32 bit)

Yes, wifi does work when removing acer-wmi module from opensuse beta. It also works after suspending the laptop.
Bluetooth is unreliable. I can pair my laptop with my phone, but I can not use my laptop to send or browse files on my phone. It's also impossible to enable it after it has been disabled.

Only problem for me is the screen brightness. When I press the key, the notification pops up but the screen brightness stays the same.

Dinu (deenoo-g) wrote :

That's good. I think I'll give it a try to OpenSuse myself, as I can see nobody bother to fix this in Ubuntu (tough I do like this OS).

I don't get it why am I opening these bugs if nobody bother to look on them.
No one looked on the logs I've posted, no feedback at all .... it's just a waste of time ....

Ubuntu 10.10 will be released next week with kernel 3.0. Opensuse and Fedora will both use kernel 3.1 and will be released next month. Because Linux 3.1 isn't even stable yet, it will not be part of Ubuntu 10.10.
You can try to post your logs somewhere else, maybe someone else can help out with the screen brightness and bluetooth issues.

The issue still exist with the latest 3.0.12-20 kernel.

The X worked fine with 2.6.38 and is working fine with 3.1.0-rc7 from latest Open Suse 12.1 Beta I've tested.

So it looks like the X got broken in 3.0 . Can you please fix back this ?

I don't know if this is related to X. The screen doesn't turn on so the laptop is unusable. However, an attached external monitor works fine. This problem is partially fixed in Opensuse 12.1 beta (probably because it uses a newer kernel). In Opensuse 12.1 Beta the screen does turn on but it's impossible to set the brightness of the screen.

Dinu, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
