Thanks for the detailed instructions. I followed them and the problem seems to be fixed now.

Just one thing to clarify: I mistakenly used "Ubuntu Software Centre" instead of Synaptic to remove official 2.6.32-33 load. It gave me a warning saying updates related to that will no longer be included. I removed them anyway.

So in future when a newer version becomes available, do I need to do something specific to receive them.
