Bug Description

Device phy0 is hard blocked, but the switch is to "unblock". The only way to use wifi is to start the system, suspend & wakeup, but on this laptop ubuntu almost everytime freezes on wakeup. On POST and in GRUB the wifi led is on, immediatelly after selecting the kernel in grub, the led turns off and wifi is not working. After suspend the led turns on again. I tried to blacklist ath9k module, but RF stays killed after boot.

Cannot unblock phy0. Network applet showing that wireless support is disabled by hardware switch.

According to notices about drivers conflict (found in another topic) i added to blacklist.conf:

blacklist iwlagn
blacklist ath5k

Then rfkill changed his response from

0: ideapad_wlan: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: yes

to

0: ideapad_wlan: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: no

and network applet stopped to show existence of wireless device at all.

There is one way to get WLAN working. You have to install Windows on your computer, install original windows drivers and then enable wireless lan. After that is everything working fine in linux too. When you disable it under Windows again, you can't enable it under linux!

Well, i've made my own investigation. Here's the result, and the main is that my wi-fi (ath9k) doesn't work.

***
Wireless in BIOS is turned on

I turned on Atheros in Windows XP

and edit blacklist.conf in this way:
# wifi - drivers conflict
blacklist iwlagn
blacklist ath9k

by pushing hardware switch and Fn+F5 and asking rfkill status i can get such a responces:

viktor@viktor-Lenovo:~$ rfkill list
0: ideapad_wlan: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: yes
 Hard blocked: no
1: ideapad_3g: Wireless WAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: no
viktor@viktor-Lenovo:~$ rfkill list
0: ideapad_wlan: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: yes
 Hard blocked: yes
1: ideapad_3g: Wireless WAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: yes
viktor@viktor-Lenovo:~$ rfkill list
0: ideapad_wlan: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: no
1: ideapad_3g: Wireless WAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: no

String "1: ideapad_3g: Wireless WAN Soft blocked: no" cannot be changed.

Network applet doesn't see any wireless device at all (even blocked or turned off).

***
Now i turned off Atheros in Windows XP

Edit blacklist.conf in this way:
# wifi - drivers conflict
# blacklist iwlagn
# blacklist ath9k

and by pushing hardware switch and Fn+F5 and asking rfkill status i can get such a responces:

viktor@viktor-Lenovo:~$ rfkill list
0: ideapad_wlan: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: yes
 Hard blocked: yes
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: yes
 Hard blocked: yes
viktor@viktor-Lenovo:~$ rfkill list
0: ideapad_wlan: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: yes
 Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: yes
 Hard blocked: yes
viktor@viktor-Lenovo:~$ rfkill list
0: ideapad_wlan: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: yes

String "1: phy0: Wireless LAN Hard blocked: yes" connot be changed.

Network applet showing that wireless device is blocked.

***

I left Atheros turned off in Windows XP

But edit blacklist.conf in this way:
# wifi - drivers conflict
blacklist iwlagn
blacklist ath9k

By pushing hardware switch and Fn+F5 and asking rfkill status i can get such a responces:

viktor@viktor-Lenovo:~$ rfkill list
0: ideapad_wlan: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: yes
 Hard blocked: yes
viktor@viktor-Lenovo:~$ rfkill list
0: ideapad_wlan: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: yes
 Hard blocked: no
viktor@viktor-Lenovo:~$ rfkill list
0: ideapad_wlan: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: no

Network applet doesn't see any wireless device at all (even blocked or turned off).

***
Now i turned on Atheros in Windows XP again

Edit blacklist.conf in this way:
# wifi - drivers conflict
# blacklist iwlagn
# blacklist ath9k

By pushing hardware switch and Fn+F5 and asking rfkill status i've got following responces:

viktor@viktor-Lenovo:~$ rfkill list

 Soft blocked: yes
 Hard blocked: yes
1: phy0: Wireless LAN

Vaclav Myska, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
