Tested the latest update to 11.10 at the weekend and the screen is still dark.
My diagnostic information can be found in bug 740893 at the below link.

Kernel 2.6.35.22 show a fully bright screen.
Kernel 2.6.38-8 was the first update i found the problem and no updates so far have corrected it.
