This is the same for me. I could connect fine in 10.10, but in 11.04 I can see the network but I now have to be very close to the router to connect. I also have a 5100.

I have the same problem as well. Does anyone have some workaround for this issue?

After upgrade, I experienced the same problems with intel wifi link 5100 at home: I can see the network but I can't connect (wpa personal). Surprisingly, I recently realize that wifi connection was successful at work (WPA_enterprise) and also in another place with some hotspot I've never used. On some other hotspot I frequently use, connection is not possible.

I wonder if it is not related to wpa_supplicant rather than the kernel...

Marc.

I found a related bug and a solution
(bug 548992)

The solution described here

Works for me.

I tried the solution to bug 548992 and it did not work for me, although I have this same issue when I boot into Windows 7 so perhaps mine is being caused by something else. I can't connect to WEP or even unsecured networks. I hope it's not hardware.

The workaround no longer works in 11.10 Oneiric.

Marc Tommasi (marc-tommasi) wrote :

In oneiric, the workaround is slightly different: create /etc/modprobe.d/disable11n.conf with

options iwlagn 11n_disable=1

NB: I've not tried with wicd since I need vpn which is not supported by wicd.

christian gluntz, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

This is very much still a problem in precise, I still have to disable N mode. Will collect the relevant information when I next boot into precise.

BTW apport-collect -p linux 778174 gives me :
