Bug Description

If I start my Dell Vostro 3700 in 10.10 without Power AC adapter Ubuntu crashes after a shot while (max 2minutes).

Ubuntu does not crash, if WLAN is switched off or is not present.
If I have a connection over LAN it does not crash, too.
It crash, if I use my SmartPhone as modem.

This does not happen with a 10.04.1 Live CD.

It does not crash in Windows.

WORKAROUND: Install the package "laptop-mode-tools". The packages acpi-support and pm-utils will be removed. Open file:
/etc/default/acpi-support

write or copy the following lines at the end:
# Switch to laptop-mode on battery power - off by default as it causes odd
# Hangs on some machines
ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE = true

Then change the Laptop-Mode on Battery in:
/etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf

to 1:
ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE_ON_BATTERY = 1

Restart the computer and it should work.

Hello Vostro 3700 - Users and specially Christian,

It's really unpossible to work with this bug. After a long search I have found a workaround that works at least for me. But attention: You are loosing the suspend and hybernate-functions.
Install the package "laptop-mode-tools". The packages acpi-support and pm-utils will be removed.

Then, with using sudo in the

/etc/default/acpi-support

write or copy the following lines at the end:

# Switch to laptop-mode on battery power - off by default as it causes odd
# Hangs on some machines
ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE = true

Then change the Laptop-Mode on Battery with sudo in the /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf to 1
like here:

ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE_ON_BATTERY = 1

Restart the computer and it should work. If you speak German so you can find under

http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/laptop-mode-utils

a detailed description.

I hope you could understand my english

Good luck

I'm sorry, but I was a little bit to fast. After I attached Linux Mint Julia to wlan and USB-Memory, it crashed after the Filetransfer began immediately also.

But I found finally a workaround, which I have tested the last 2 days:

I deinstalled the pm-utils 1.4 with synaptic. Download the package pm-utils 1.3.0-1ubuntu1_all_deb from

"http://packages.ubuntu.com/de/lucid/all/pm-utils/download"

and installed it.

Now it workes fine and all functions remain in the best way.

In my opinion the error lies in the current pm-utils package. But I am only a completely normal user and not a programmer!

Would anybody test it too and write a coment?

Thanks

Hi, everybody!

I have the same issue... When I try to install ubuntu 10.10 x64 I have to use a little tricks to get it! And it was because the bug "intel ips" So I solved using the live cd and adding to the etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf the following line "blacklist intel_ips" and in this way I was able to install ubuntu...

Now I have the same problem that you are describing, when I use my laptop in battery mode it hang in a black screen and I have to hard reset, as information my laptop is a Core i7 Gateway ID59C and I can work perfectly with my battery in Win 7. Also I can work perfectly with only the AC Adapter in ubuntu, but it is not so funny.

I would love to help to solve this problem but I'm a beginner user in linux, so I could be useful to try anything you request.

Finally, I haven't done anything that you're advicing.

I'm sorry for my bad english, I'm not a native speaker.

Thanks for the time.

alexpennos (pennos) wrote :

The solution that aspera suggested on #37 worked perfectly for me. I now have one more question, the update manager wants to download a newer version of pm-utils 1.4-1 (i think). Should i avoid this?

aspera (aspera10) wrote :

@alexpennos

do not download the newer version - you'll get the same problems like before. With Synaptik you can
force pm-utils 1.3.0 package.

On my laptop, the workaround still works fine.

I tried the mainline kernel on ASUS X51:

The effects are:

-System does not freeze anymore when unplugging AC-Adaptor and running from Battery. Power-Management (Indicators) appears to work properly.

-Two Messages appearing on startup: The first one ata1: softreset failed.... Sorry, they disappear too fast to take full notes.
-System does NOT start up with AC disconnected. It freezes on startup like before. You have to start it up on AC and then unplug AC for being able to run it on battery.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if I can test anything else.

Jost Menke (jmenke) wrote :

@Thomas Lenarz: Hmm.. So there seems to be some improvement with the 3.4 kernel, but no final fix. In the meantime, RC4 is out, maybe you want to give it a try:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.4-rc4-precise/

PS: Did you check if your BIOS is up to date? As others already mentioned, especially the ACPI stuff tends to be broken.

Thomas Lenarz (tommesml) wrote :

@Jost Menke: Thanks a lot for your reply. I tried the RC4 of the kernel. No change:
It works OK on battery when I pull the plug after start up. Booting up on battery does not work.
The freeze occured just after the sound was played on presentation of the login panel.
A short time after freezing, the screen went blank and I had to switch of manually.

My BIOS is not the latest one. There have been updates by ASUS. However, there was no documentation that any of the updates would fix ACPI problems. Anyway, I haven't got Windows for use of my laptop since it shipped with FreeDos as operating system. ASUS only provide their BIOS-updates in the form of Windows installers which unfortunately leaves me unable to install a BIOS upgrade.

Thomas Lenarz, please execute the following via the Terminal and feel free to subscribe me to it:

Thanks!

Thomas Lenarz (tommesml) wrote :

@Christopher: Done. It is Bug #995223.

However, I had to boot again with the last Ubuntu kernel. ubuntu-bug did not allow me to file the bug with active mainline kernel. I hope this makes no difference for the information you need.

Thanks a lot!

Jost Menke (jmenke) wrote :

Thomas Lenarz: I really strongly advise you to update your BIOS first. Manufacturers tend to fix things without neccessarily mentioning it in the changelog. For example, on my HP nx7400, Speedstep didn't work in Linux until I updated the BIOS to the latest version. The documentation said nothing about it.

If Asus really offers Windows only updates for a product that shipped with DOS, I'd nag them to supply an alternative. Which exact model of the X51 do you have? For the X51R, there is a DOS update procedure:
http://support.asus.com/Documents/detail.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=3&m=X51R&s=100&hashedid=qvvRL8XY0ncOXxx6&os=&no=1704

aspera, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the mainline kernels archive directory daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.7-rc8

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:

Nevertheless, I found a workaround for this issue:
Setting the following boot option solves the crash problem:

The above boot option can be easily set by editing /etc/default/grub:
