Bug Description

Neither K3b, Brasero or the file managers (Dolphin, nautilus) detect a blank DVD+RW, I'd like to burn onto (the drive is a LG GSA-4163B).
This is true for the current Lucid kernel, but also for 2.6.35 from Maverick (in Maverick and Lucid) - I've just upgraded to Maverick.

When inserting the DVD, the drive's LED provides feedback and behaves as always, blinking a few times, but then nothing happens in Ubuntu/Kubuntu.

Audio CDs or Data CDs work fine.
I have not tested any commercial or non-empty DVD yet.

This appears to have regressed during Lucid development; I am quite certain that it was still working during the Christmas holidays in 2009 - I cannot say when this got broken, because I rarely burn anything.

I've tested it with the upstream kernel build (Linux base 2.6.35-999-generic #201008060910 SMP Fri Aug 6 10:22:05 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux) and the empty disk does not get accepted with it, too.

It appears that K3b says "No medium present" probably too early already, when the disk drive is still blinking (after just ~1 second after loading the disk); it used to take rather ~5 seconds or longer for any medium to get detected.

Firstly we need to eliminate some possible problems.

I have some things I'd like you to try:

1. It maybe that the disks you have aren't compatible with your drive.
1a. Try some other DVDs (differently branded blanks and pre-records)

2. This could be a regression issue.
2a. I am in the process of testing a script which will build a bootable USB drive. The drive will contain 4 *.iso files; Hardy, Karmic, Lucid and Maverick. All you have to do it run the script (I'll tell you how when it's complete) and boot your desktop with it. You can then find out where the issue occurred. I suggest that if the disk it not visible in any of the distros, then it may be the case that your DVD-RW drive is not compatible with the disks you're trying to use [ref 1/1a].

I suggest 1/1a would be your best option to start with. Try to find out exactly what your DVD-RW can and can't read. If you can do this and get back to me as soon as possible, we can start to resolve the issue.

Okay, if this works it will be the script I was talking about.

It will take about 30mins to run internet speed dependent.

Run it, insert the USB stick into your computer and boot from it.

Start with Lucid and work backwards.

If you could tell me which distribution was the last to work, that would be helpful.

Thank you for your effort.

I've tried other disks:
1. with some CDRW, I could not format (both quick and normal) it. K3b failed with a "Blanking error", brasero reported success (quick format), but the disk was still not formatted.
2. Another DVD-R showed up as "Blank DVD" once, I've then ejected it (from the hardware eject button), and it got not detected as a blank medium anymore (also when tried a third time now).

I am pasting dmesg output from these attempts:

Well, just "Device > Load" in K3b made KDE notify me about a blank DVD again (as before).

Only this was added to dmesg (the clocksource message has been there before "Load" already):
[ 3912.648032] Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = -231260494 ns)
[ 4306.359731] cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!

Would it be possible for you to attempt to boot Hardy via the USB multi-boot script I gave you and re-do your tests in there? It would help to eliminate any hardware issues you may be experiencing. To save time, edit the script to remove the other distributions, so they are not downloaded. It shouldn't take you too long and would help by answering a few of my questions.

I do have the same problem on a dell inspiron 5150. Blank DVD causes some activity in the drive, but no errors are being reported. In order to analyse the problem I installed qpxtool. When the blank disc is inserted, qpxtool does not detect the presence of the media. Media = TDK DVD+R 1-16x 4.7 GB Data/Video.

Lee Jones (lag) wrote :

That's interesting.

Does it display the same behaviour with other CD/DVDs?

I notice that your drive doesn't have DVD+R write capabilities.

I'm wondering if it would have any reason to detect blank DVD+Rs.

Lee Jones (lag) wrote :

Daniel, can you also run qpxtool and provide a print-screen please?

Daniel Hahler (blueyed) wrote :

Lee, can you help me further debug this?

(I've been contacted by Michael via email - he reported bug 605716, quite similar)

Lee Jones (lag) wrote :

I am happy to try, although I'm not an expert in this area.

It would be certainly be easier if I had the problem hardware.

I did contact linux-scsi regarding this issue, but they seem reluctant to help.

Let me have a look at Michael's bug and see if I can extract more info from there.

I've built you some kernels to test.

They are the latest Maverick ones.

Please test and get back to me.

http://people.canonical.com/~ljones/lp605716-maverick/

You'll need:
linux-headers-2.6.35-16_2.6.35-16.23_all.deb

And either:
linux-headers-2.6.35-16-generic_2.6.35-16.23_i386.deb
linux-image-2.6.35-16-generic_2.6.35-16.23_i386.deb

Or:
linux-headers-2.6.35-16-generic_2.6.35-16.23_amd64.deb
inux-image-2.6.35-16-generic_2.6.35-16.23_amd64.deb

Depending on whether you have a 32bit or 64bit machine.

Daniel Hahler (blueyed) wrote :

Thanks, Lee.
Are these special kernels, with additional patches? - I am running Maverick already.

What I wanted to try was bi-secting the upstream kernel (starting with the current one, of course).

Lee Jones (lag) wrote :

I am more than happy to do that with you Daniel.

How would you like to proceed?

Do you have access to IRC?

Daniel Hahler (blueyed) wrote :

As said on IRC I've started bisecting this, but ran into some problems:
1. v2.6.32 from Linus' tree (vanilla) oopses on boot (and I cannot see the whole kernel panic message); tried Ubuntu config and from "make localyesconfig"
2. I've tried 2.6.31-22-generic from the Ubuntu repos (Karmic), which also failed (although I've thought that this has regressed in Lucid). Same with 2.6.31-14-generic.

Looking at the output of "lshw", I see:
  capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd dvd-r dvd-ram

Shouldn't "dvd-rw" show up there?

However, I am not sure to have ever burnt a DVD+RW on the device. I think I will stick to using a DVD-R for the moment, and try other RWs later.

Sorry I missed you yesterday on IRC.

When you say that the kernels failed, in what way?

I've just issued lshw on my DVD-RW and I receive the same output.

If you can find some time on a week day (perhaps take your machine to work?), I can help you with your bisect using Ubuntu kernels. Did you find any kernels that still worked?

Lee Jones (lag) wrote :

Are you still with us Daniel?

Daniel Hahler (blueyed) wrote :

Well, I've gone back to Karmic without finding a working kernel.
I am not sure even anymore to have even burnt a dvd rw.. ;)

Given that there's a chance for the hardware to got broken, or some other software misbehaving, I would have to test it using a real "Karmic" system.
I could also try going back to Hardy or something alike, but that it unlikely to boot given Maverick's upstart in userspace.
I will just leave this open, and provide any additional information I might find in the future - it is not very important for me anymore though; I have burnt the media on another system.
