Bug Description

DVD and CD Drives are not recognize/mounted/don't work??? They show up in Disk utility but when trying to mount via terminal I get a a device not found error. I can boot from them during startup but after startup when the system is running I can put in a dvd or cd and the drive will spin up the lights will flash and then nothing happens. I have tried data, CD's, DVD's, movies, music and blanks and the same result.

I am running Lucid 10.04.

This happened after my upgrade from Karmic.

Anybody??? This is really annoying. I did a complete system reinstall via CD reloading Lucid and still the same issue. Both my drives work and will boot and can use them in other machines?? Can someone please help here I am giving it until Maverick and then I will go somewhere else. There are hundreds of reports and requests for help for this issue all over the internet and no solutions yet?? Why release an OS/kernel that can't use one of the most common drive types?? Two and a half months up here and not one reply??? Really?? I have seen several other bugs similar to this one and most of them just get ignored and eventually dropped if its not an easy type this into terminal and see if it works type solution? I am hoping that this is not the case here.

Hi Michael,

I'm sorry no one has picked this up sooner.

I am working on a similar bug that Daniel Hahler posted (see #4.1 & #4.2 on here).

I'll have a closer look at your logs tomorrow, as it's quite late here now.

Lee,

Thanks!!

I'm guessing its a kernel problem?? Is there any hopes that the
Maverick kernel has resolved the issue?? It worked perfect when I was
running Karmic but ever since upgrade both drives stopped working. I
even did a clean reinstall of Lucid from CD thinking it could have been
something with the upgrade process but it is still the same. If I boot
with a disc in the tray it is recognized about 50% of the time and it
will play normally for anywhere between 2 and 30 mins then it quits and
there is a disconnect somewhere??? It even does it if the disc is
currently being read ie... I can be watching a movie and it will just
stop like the disc was ejected?

Ive searched for months for possible solutions and have found nothing
that has worked yet. I hope this issue get resolved soon not having a
CD/DVD drive is really a pain.

They show up in disk utility and dmesg I have entries in fstab have
tweaked with the bios settings completely removed the drives and
reinstalled them. I have tried to manually mount them via terminal and
get device not found and other similar errors.

I do a lot of video/audio editing and have had to use one of my old
machines instead of my main computer. You would think that this would
be resolved as I have found hundreds of posts on it in various forums.
Which I am sure is only a small percentage as most people would just go
find another OS and use it. I really love Ubuntu and would hate to have
to downgrade to something else. It is truly an amazing OS!!

Thanks,
Mike

I need a few things from you.

Firstly can you send me a printscreen of qpxtool when a disk is inserted.

Secondly can you put various disks in then send me the following files:

/var/log/messages
/var/log/kernel.log

Also, you mentioned that you can get it to play for several minutes. Can you do that until it falls over, then send me those files please?

I've built you some kernels to test.

They are the latest Maverick ones.

Please test and get back to me.

http://people.canonical.com/~ljones/lp605716-maverick/

You'll need:
linux-headers-2.6.35-16_2.6.35-16.23_all.deb

And either:
linux-headers-2.6.35-16-generic_2.6.35-16.23_i386.deb
linux-image-2.6.35-16-generic_2.6.35-16.23_i386.deb

Or:
linux-headers-2.6.35-16-generic_2.6.35-16.23_amd64.deb
inux-image-2.6.35-16-generic_2.6.35-16.23_amd64.deb

Depending on whether you have a 32bit or 64bit machine.

  • QPX Terminal Edit (8.1 KiB, text/plain; name="QPX Terminal "; charset="UTF-8")

Lee,

Thanks for taking the time to help out on this!! Here are the files you
requested these are before restart I'll send you them again with drives
working.
Also QPX tool did nothing upon inserting a disc I copied the text from
the log tab and pasted it to the bottom of the QPX Terminal file I am
sending. I did copy all the error messages from terminal for QPX also.

Lee,

Here are the logs with everything working. Once it stops I'll send you
those logs as well. Also are the qpx screenshots.

I'll take a look at these now.

The interesting logs will be when it finally snaps - be sure to post those.

Lee,

I installed the Maverick Kernel and so far it is working perfect. I
know there are many others out there that are having the same issue is
it possible/OK for me to refer them to the kernel downloads??

I did a restart with and without a disc in the drive and it is working
as expected. So far I have only tested a production audio CD, DVD, a
burned DVD, and a CD Game so far all worked and the drive was mounted!!

Wouldn't really call this an official fix, but it might have to do if we
can't find where the lucid kernel was failing at? Or maybe it is?!

Anyways thank you for the help I'll keep you posted on what I find and
what happens this evening with the drives, and let me know if there is
anything else you need from me.

Yes, please send those kernels to anyone else who you feel is suffering from the same issue. Would you also be kind enough to ask them to report back here if this solves it for them too. If they have open Launchpad bugs can you tell them to post them here along with their comments?

As Lucid is LTS, I think we should endeavour to fix it. Would you be kind enough to help me do that? If I conduct a bisect I will need someone who has this issue to test the kernels for me. It shouldn't take up too much of your time overall, but your help will be needed at short, regular intervals.

Lee,

Thanks for the help and the info!! I will pass it on then and also I
will be willing to help if you guys need it. I just don't want to mess
up my machine as it is a work computer, other than that I don't mind,
it's people like you that make this a great OS and if I can help in any
way let let me know!!!
