I can indeed confirm that, after quite a bit of tweaking and following Rik Theys' solution, I have been able to get the touchpad on my Dell Inspiron 15R N5110 to be recognized as a touchpad:
I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=0008 Version=7326 N: Name="AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint TouchPad" P: Phys=isa0060/serio1/input0 S: Sysfs=/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input16 U: Uniq= H: Handlers=mouse2 event16 B: PROP=8 B: EV=b B: KEY=e420 0 70000 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 B: ABS=2608000 1000003
I can now set the sensitivity of the touchpad as well as enable two-finger scrolling.
