I figured the bug is confirmed by the standards on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status. If I'm wrong, please bear with me since this is the first time I'm doing this.
The workaround I used (and the other workarounds suggested on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9219366#4) all involved disabling or modifying xorg.conf. In fact, one workaround (that I haven't tried yet) is to replace xorg.conf with one that worked previously. Hence the link to the bug above - it sounds like this is a (relatively) simple configuration issue in xorg.conf.
