Thanks for the information. Just for clarification, is it required that both of the steps be taken? Many users have found it sufficient to install just the package, others have noticed that just the line is enough.

I have uninstalled the package and I confirm that the internal mic works
just by adding "model=auto".

$ cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.20.
$ uname -a
Linux frodo 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:05:01 UTC 2009
x86_64 GNU/Linux
$ tail -n 1 /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
options snd-hda-intel model=auto

Adding the line "options snd-hda-intel model=auto" to "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf" and switching the capture device from "Front Mic" to "Int Mic" using alsamixer got the internal mic on my new Sony Vaio CW-series working. Annoyingly, every time Pulseaudio is restarted (including reboot of course) the capture device is reset to "Front Mic" and the internal microphone seizes to work until the setting is manually changed to "Int Mic" again.

I did not install the linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic package.

I don't know if this belongs here or not, however......
I have a Sony Vaio PCG-4V1W purchased in NZ
Running Ubuntu-Netbook-Remix 10.4

I had the same problem, had to add the line "options snd-hda-intel model=auto" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
