Looks like the Toshiba L300 model has the same problem, because it has the same SATA controller.
I tried with 2.6.28 kernel (from ubuntu 9.04) and with 2.6.29-rc5 kernel too.
The symptom is exactly the same. Here is the relevant bugreport filed to ubuntu:
