I worked around my problem with this:

For $7.00 USD I was able to get headphone sound. This isn't the best solution, but it works right now. Find a supplier near you for one of these things.

In Kubuntu the USB device can be configured as the default sound card, and when the USB audio card is unplugged, the computer switches to the internal card. by simply adding this to the end of my headphone cord, it solved my problem. Ubuntu's Gnome can likely be configured in a similar way, but I have not used it to say for sure.

This USB sound card seems to work great with Linux, unlike the VIA chip. As long as I have this USB card, I will never have sound issues again on any computer.
