My notebook headphone jack is no sound on Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS. And I installed latest Alsa driver 1.0.17 in my Ubuntu. When I before install alsa driver I change the alsa-kernel/pci/hda/patch_via.c this file (detail from:http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=556217). After I installed the alsa driver. The headphone jack is still no sound.

Kernel: 2.6.24-21

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Can you also confirm this issue exists with the most recent Karmic Koala 9.10 Alpha release? ISO CD images are available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/ . If the issue remains with Karmic it would be great to then also test the latest upstream mainline kernel available. This will allow additional upstream developers to examine this issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Thanks in advance.

I have the same issue on my everex gbook and it is not new.
See here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/184314
It still has not been fixed and has been around since 7.10

I have posted a bug upstream, as it is still not fixed in Alsa driver: 1.0.21
https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=4752

I tried the patch for patch_via.c, but can't get it to compile and install for the life of me.

Hope someone can get a proper fix for this one day.

I don't think they need to fix anything, they just need to make sure problems they solved before are included in new releases. The Gbook I have had Ubuntu 8.04 preinstalled and sound worked properly. At some point Canonical must have been working with Everex or VIA on this driver.

Sure hope you guys can get this working.

Thanks for looking into this, Eric.

Hi M45smg

I worked around my problem with this:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10311&cs_id=1031105&p_id=2881&seq=1&format=2

For $7.00 USD I was able to get headphone sound. This isn't the best solution, but it works right now. Find a supplier near you for one of these things.

In Kubuntu the USB device can be configured as the default sound card, and when the USB audio card is unplugged, the computer switches to the internal card. by simply adding this to the end of my headphone cord, it solved my problem. Ubuntu's Gnome can likely be configured in a similar way, but I have not used it to say for sure.

This USB sound card seems to work great with Linux, unlike the VIA chip. As long as I have this USB card, I will never have sound issues again on any computer.
