I'm also suffering from this bug - I found that none of the users (my user or root) had the ability to use audio devices in System > Administration > Users and Groups > Properties, or belonged to the groups pulse, pulse-access or pulse-rt - this must be some kind of indicator of the problem, but when I enabled all these features I was still stuck without sound - I do not know enough to about Ubuntu to know if there is anything else that should obviously be enabled in order to have sound. I found the following operating systems don't have sound on this laptop: Ubuntu 8.10, Linux Mint 6, Fedora 10 and OpenSuse 11. Windows Vista, however, does. But Vista is my last resort (that probably goes for all of us).

My results of the alsa-info.sh script are here: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=849dc970f609153856aae12d370f893952af98f0

Here's some more info (I don't know if it's needed or not):

I'm more then happy to provide more information if needed.

This model of laptop is the one given to disabled students in Britain, so I would think it's very important that a fix is found!
