I just installed Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex (Alpha 4) on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo pro V1000 laptop, which automatically updated itself to kernel 2.6.27-2-generic.
I can confirm that there is sound via PHONES and that I can record both guitar(Input 2/R) and microphone(Input 1/L), with advanced set to either "ON" and "OFF". I haven't tested if MIDI works yet, maybe later.
To reduce the options from the drop downs under Sound Settings, I disabled the internal sound card (onboard Intel AC97 card) by editing /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist:
# turn off internal soundcard
blacklist snd_intel8x0
blacklist snd_ac97_codec
blacklist snd_ac97
(From http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1370551&postcount=8)
In Sound Settings, the dropdown now looks like this, marked with a cross if clicking on Sound works:
x Autodetect
x EDIROL UA-25 USB Audio (ALSA)
x EDIROL UA-25 USB Audio (OSS)
x EDIROL UA-25 USB Audio (OSS)
ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
OSS - Open Sound System
x PulseAudio Sound Server
Maybe it isn't important, since the sound card seems to work fine, but I tried the sound test for fun, With advanced set to "ON" or "OFF", doesn't matter:
$speaker-test -c2 -D plughw:UA25 -twav
speaker-test 1.0.17
Playback device is plughw:UA25
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 97 to 190217
Period size range from 48 to 95109
Using max buffer size 190216
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 0
was set buffer_size = 190216
0 - Front Left
Floating point exception (core dumped)
