I have tested the alpha4 for ubuntu 8.10 and there is no longer any problem with the SP25 / UA25 soundcard in this release.
Very much looking forward to the main release of Intrepid!

It should be noted that in the process of experimenting with the soundcard in different ubuntu versions I have realised I missed something the first time round and have managed to make the 8.04 version recognise this soundcard. However it only seems to work when the 'advance mode' switch on the soundcard is set to the off position (meaning that the advanced features of this soundcard could not function), whereas 8.10 recognised it in all instances.

Thanks very much

Subject: [Bug 248503] Re: USB soundcard not recognised (edirol/cakewalk UA25)

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-
image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and
test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer
2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4.
Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced.
You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the
bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please
open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the
2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please
specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26
kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Status in “linux” source package in Ubuntu: New

Bug description:
I am using an Edirol/Cakewalk UA25 USB soundcard with my Windows partition, which works.
I have also used the UA25 with Ubuntu 7.10, which worked.
I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 and the audio does not immediately work through this soundcard as it did with 7.10
I then did a fresh install of 8.04 rather than an upgrade and it did not solve the problem

The command "speaker-test -c2 -D plughw:UA25 -twav"
returns the result "Playback device is plughw:UA25
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1207:(_snd_pcm_hw_open) Invalid value for card
Playback open error: -19,No such device", repeatedly.

I have read bug report 111635 but although the problem is similar in my case Ubuntu does not appear to have recognised the sound card at all.
I've also seen a few related problems on the forums but I haven't found any answers that have worked in this case.
