works for me.
Had same Problem (Thinkpad T61 with intel 4965) after one of the latest updates in kubuntu 8.10, wlan works withoud encryption + with wpa2/psk with German T-com Speedport W700V router. I installed from scratch with the given Kubuntu Intrepid disk for 64bit.

KNetworkManager didn't set wlan up until I configured a new, unencrypted connection after the update, wich I reconfigured encrypted afterwards.
