Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-11-generic
Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.27-*-generic

Asus F5N laptop freezes on restart after displaying the message "Will now restart." It will not respond to any key and has to be powered off by depressing the power button. Shutting down X and unloading nVidia and snd-hda-intel drivers does not help. Will not reboot from single user mode with the same symptoms. Passing "reboot=b" parameter to the kernel does not help either. This affects Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop CD (fails to reboot after initial install) and the current 2.6.22-14-generic SMP kernel. In addition to this information, dmidecode command output is attached.

Hardy 8.04 and Intrepid Alpha5 still have this problem.

Per the kernel team's bug policy, can you please attach the following information. Please be sure to attach each file as a separate attachment.

* uname -a > uname-a.log
* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
* dmesg > dmesg.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log

Also, it would be helpful to try to capture your dmesg output after an attempted Suspend/Resume cycle as outlined here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend . For more information regarding the kernel team bug policy, please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help and feedback.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

New kernel did not fix it. Intrepid Alpha5 freezes laptop completely after the message "Rebooting the system" is displayed. Keyboard is dead as well as CD-ROM eject button, and the only thing that can be done is to power machine off by holding Power button.

Looking at the attachments in this bug report, I noticed that "uname-a.log" was flagged as a patch. A patch contains changes to an Ubuntu package that will resolve a bug, however that attachment doesn't appear to be one. Subsequently I've unchecked the patch flag for it. In the future keep in mind the definition of a patch. Thanks!

Still an issue with 9.04 alpha 5. Should we report upsteam? or open a new bug using "ubuntu-bug -p linux" command?

This bug has been there since 8.04 and still exists with 9.04 beta now. Apparently its limited to ASUS Laptops.

Related bugS to being unable to restart:
1) Restart either hangs on the Xubuntu Progress Screen or shows a gray screen with randomly appearing black and white vertical and horizontal lines.
2) Creating terminal sessions/screens is impossible. Ctrl+F1 and the rest gives a gray screen with randomly appearing black and white vertical and horizontal lines.

System Specs:
Laptop: ASUS X80NE
Processor: AMD Turion64 X2 32bit Mode
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 7000M
OS: Jaunty 9.04 Beta/Windows XP dual boot
Linux Kernel Version: 2.6.28-11-generic

Hi Guys,

Thanks for testing Jaunty Beta. Care to do one last test and see if this exists with the upstream kernel as well? if so, it would be great to also open an upstream bug report at bugzilla.kernel.org . The Ubuntu kernel team has started providing upstream kernel builds for testing - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please let us know your results. Thanks.

I'm in the same boat. Asus F5N-158, shutdown worked with 8.10 after one tweak, but restart is stopping at the end. Only the shutdown button helps. I will try the Jaunty kernel today. If not, is there a workaround?

I found a solution for these issues.
Solve the poweroff problem:
edit /etc/modules
add this line:
power_off=1

To solve the reboot issue:
add to the kernel parameters: all_generic_id

You can turn off the leds with:
sudo echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/asus-laptop/[bluetooth, wlan,...]
Script for network-manager, wlan: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=527837

I miss the psysical buttons and the kill-switch, but hopefully, in time :)

Super! all_generic_ide kernel parameter fixed my reboot problem on Asus F5N right away. Based on what other reporters say, I beleive this bug may now be safely marked as fixed.

As to the wireless LED script, it needs further enchancement but unfortunately could not post to read-only forum Horváth Dávid is referring to. Basically, if you plug in Ethernet cable while connected to wireless network, wled stays on. Now unplug Ethernet cable - you are now connected to wireless but wled is off. The script needs to distinguish between wired and wireless connections so that only wireless interface controls the wlan LED. May I propose to move futher discussion of this issue to Bug #199682 "Asus F5N laptop Special keys not working..." and to mark this reboot bug as closed. Many thanks to Horváth!

As David has mentioned above, you have to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst file. Just find entries starting with "kernel" and add the parameter to the end of the line to make it look like

kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.27-14-generic root=UUID=9d9c7fd7-d3bc-473b-b482 ro quiet splash all_generic_ide

To test this on your system first, you can press Esc at GRUB prompt during the boot up, and to add parameter to kernel line as shown above. If it works, you can then go ahead and modify /boot/grub/menu.lst file to make changes permanent.

Hope this helps.

Hi!

I become same error on Asus F5N AP222. In grub's menu.lst i have the "all_generic_ide" kernel parameter, but i still cant reboot the notebook. I have currently Jaunty.
 before i had intrepid, and with this same settings worked well the reboot, until i have upgraded to jaunty. (i have another kernel parameter too iommu=noaperture)

X-Daemon (x-daemon) wrote :

as i wrote earlier if the system is not in the built in sata disk and the disk removed, the system reboots.
i found, the problem is when the sata disk handled by the ahci driver.
if the sata disk handled by the ata_generic driver, the system reboots.
so if the system loads ata_generic before ahci.
the all_generic_ide=1 parameter important.
i resolve the problem in this way:
# echo ata_generic all_generic_ide=1 >> /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
# update-initramfs -u
i use lenny but maybe it helps

Hardware specific kernel issues are never fixed as I can observe from several cases, with video adapters being the only exception.
Having said that, the BIOS on Asus laptops is far from being perfect either. Not sure how to go about it.

I fixed it in Ubuntu Natty (kernel 2.6.38) by adding the following parameter to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX line in /etc/default/grub
  "ata_generic.all_generic_ide=1"
