netboot hardy installer marvell sata disks not detected.

Bug Description

1) Ubuntu 8.04 hardy

2) netboot.tar.gz ?

3) 2008.02.26

5)
1 in every 20 or so boots the installer will detect the disks. The other 19 times, they are not detected.

This means I've actually managed to install hardy on the disks previously (by randomly changing bios settings). On my installed system, running the linux-2.6.24 kernel they work as normal. The problem seems to arise whenever using the hardy-installer. Though I previously had the same symptoms on an installed system running (custom) linux-2.6.2{2,3} kernels.

Included for your viewing pleasure; dmesg, lsmod, lspci from the installer, and from an installed system.

Hi Ebbex,

Care to test the latest release, it should have an updated kernel, 2.6.24-11. From your comments I'm assuming this is not an issue if you use the alternate installer? Also curious what happens if you eliminate the netboot in step 2? Thanks.

Using the files {linux, initrd.gz}, dated 2008.03.04, from
ftp://ftp.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/ubuntu-installer/i386/
None of my disks show up.

I don't have a cd-rom, so i'm not able to test normal/alternate cd-releases. It needs to be done via pxe.

hard drive controller ATI SB600 on both computers

I had another amd64 PC with the same kernel version, which I did an scp of the sata*.ko modules to the netbooted /lib/modules/.... directory then modprobed, but I don't have access to that PC any more.

Confirming this!
I've got an Asus A6M laptop, on which I've tried to install 8.04.1 (2.6.24-19 !!!) from the netboot image I found here [1].
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy-updates/main/installer-amd64/current/images/netboot/

And I couldn't see my hdd detected.

I must add that for me, in none of 20 boots it detected my hard disks!
I would change the priority.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Thank you Leann,
I'll be back with test results as soon as I'll get in touch with my
laptop I used last time.

Cheers
