In case this helps the developers, I've been seeing users of Linux Mint experiencing this recently.

The common factor has been the the D3 state of the speaker volume, headphone volume, capture volume/switch NID's

Running the following command has always worked to get the headphones working:

sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x03 SET_POWER 0x0

Doing the same for the speaker NID (0x02) has been hit and miss, mostly miss, and so far no one has tried the Capture NID.

Dell Inspiron's of various models seem to have been affected. Also, HP Pavilion All-in-One's of a few different models that have ALC225 have also experienced this.

4.15.0-96 was the last working kernel for most if not all of these users.
