Quick question.
Due to lack of time and resources to investigate this bug, I reinstalled de novo, Ubuntu 16.04.2.
The new kernel 4.8.0-41 was installed but the fact that I now am seeing a functional system doesn't really impact this bug. This bug was about very serious issues with the upgrade of the kernel of a system that started life as 16.04 LTS-original.

Thoughts on the disposition of this bug:
Until other can prove this bug no longer exists via overwhelming numbers of successful UPGRADES as opposed to new installs, this bug should remain open and investigated energetically.
