As Greg says above, there are 2 ways round this problem: adding "all_generic_ide" to GRUB or switching from IDE to RAID. Both work for me, whereas if I do neither my Inspiron 530 won't boot with Hardy. But are there any advantages/disadvantages to doing one rather than the other? I've settled on the switching IDE to RAID solution but would like to know if that's the optimum solution.
