I have exactly the same laptop, and also get this. Unfortunately I only found your bug report after I had done an online upgrade to Gutsy - and thus 'bricking' my laptop. :(

Like you found, dropping to the older kernal fixes the boot problem, but I then seemed to have a load of other problems (GFX/sound drivers not working). Feisty worked fine on first install with no problems, that why I was so disappointed with Gutsy. I've had to revert to *cough* Win XP for the time being...
