Bug Description

Note : Reported on behalf of a friend.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My friends ASus AS9301WSMi laptop worked flawlessly with Feisty, but once he did an online upgrade to Gutsy, the new kernel would not boot. Unfortunately he rashly reinstalled Feisty, so the evidence has disappeared.
However, he then tried the Gutsy LiveCD, which also, will not boot.
I've suggested he look at TTY1 to try and deduce where it's got to in the boot sequence, and shall post such information as it becomes available.
I`m the originator of this problem - The laptop seemed to hang/lockup at certain points in the booting of the live CD - the loading progress bar would stop moving. Unfortunately, I only discovered this after doing an online update from 7.04 to 7.10 - which obviously installed the new kernel (2.6.14?) I had to boot with the previous version of the kernel (ended with 16 cant remember the rest of the version number, sorry) and then I could boot into Ubuntu. My nvidia (6100go) would not work then though - I was stuck with 800x480 res.
7.04 worked perfectly on the same laptop - the nvidia card/wireless card/soundcard all worked fine with no fettling. 7.10 just didnt want to play ball, so I've had to re-install feisty.
