This also effects my laptop (xubuntu 14.04 x64)

Toshiba Portege R835-p70.
Intel core i5-2410M
Mobile Intel HM65 Express
Intel HD Graphics 3000

Steps to reproduce:
1. Reboot computer
2. Log in normally
3. Close lid and allow computer to enter sleep
4. Wake computer (login screen appears)
5. Enter password to unlock session

The screen will immediately go blank (both backlight and LCD). Switching to a virtual terminal or SSHing into the box works fine.
