Bug Description

The touchpad on my new XPS 13 Developer edition is detected as "DLL060A:00 06CB:2734" when I installed Ubuntu 13.10. The touchpad previously worked with the default the Ubuntu 12.04 install and further live boots of 12.04 show the touchpad still working. I have made multiple attempts to clean reinstall 13.1 have failed to fix the touchpad issues. The output of xinput list:

jacob Hemstad, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Just to clarify, which version of Precise specifically did this last work in (ex. 12.04.01, 12.04.02, 12.04.03)?

As well, did this problem not occur in either Quantal or Raring?

It worked in 12.04.3LTS. I am currently updating to 12.10 to check if it continues to work.

Jacob Hemstad, 12.04.03 would be equivalent to testing Raring given it shares the same kernel and xorg stack -> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack . So, this would be a regression going from Raring to Saucy.

It seems the LTSEnablementStack doesn't support x64, which is what I'm using.

Jacob Hemstad, if you are saying the enablement stack doesn't work for whatever reason, that would be a bug in the stack, which you are welcome to report a bug against the stack package. The purpose of the enablement stack is to provide support (including x64) for folks who want to retain the 12.04 userspace, but benefit from device enablement from later kernels+X.Org versions.

Jacob Hemstad (hempinstead) wrote :

I'm not sure I understand how the Enablement Stack will help me.

The touchpad is detected and functioning correctly in Precise 12.04.

I would like to use Saucy 13.10, but the touchpad is not recognized correctly in Saucy.

Jacob, I reported in the other bug that this was fixed for me with a clean install of 13.10. However, I've just realised that Dell replaced my motherboard the day before I did the install.

The replacement motherboard is on the A01 BIOS, whereas the previous board was on A02. Can you confirm which BIOS you're running?

Also, I'm not sure how related it is but is your touchscreen detected correctly and working?

Jacob Hemstad (hempinstead) wrote :

Interesting. I am on BIOS Version A02.

I can get the touchscreen to work if I install the "config-usb-hid-synaptics-touchscreen_1_all.db" from Dell's downloads:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/xps-13-9333?driverId=4NTWR&osCode=1204A&fileId=3334721637&languageCode=EN&categoryId=CS

So it would seem that this is an issue with the A02 BIOS and Ubuntu 13.1. I don't believe there is anyway to revert to the previous version of the BIOS either.

I've got a friend with the exact same XPS13 he order previous to my own. His touchpad is working correctly and is also on the A02 BIOS. It would seem that it is not a BIOS problem.

not sure this is actually a dupe of the other bug, since this is happening also with the saucy kernel

anyway, it's a kernel issue

Jacob Hemstad, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.14-rc2

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

I can confirm that loading the current mainline kernel does NOT fix the issue. I am running 3.14.0-031400rc7-generic with no improvement. If anything the touch pad is more erratic.

This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug report[0]? That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

Please follow the instructions on the wiki page[0]. The first step is to email the appropriate mailing list. If no response is received, then a bug may be opened on bugzilla.kernel.org.

Once this bug is reported upstream, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-reported-upstream'.

Jacob Hemstad, one thing that would be vital before reporting this upstream is to fully commit bisect from 12.04.0 to 13.10, in order to identify the offending commit. This is how upstream would advise this once you made it known it was a regression. Could you please bisect this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ?

This bug is probably going to be fixed when bug 1265885 is. There is a working kernel that was linked to the other bug. I don't know if the patch has made it to a stable kernel yet.

FWIW, this bug may just be a dupe of bug 1265885.
