Thank you for the reply, glad I didn't mess something up.

Per request in reply #9, edited start option with both 'quiet' and 'splash' removed from the boot line.

Response was the same as in reply #6. Upon pressing F10 to continue booting the USB drive flashes once and the screen goes black and remains that way, also no further activity from the USB stick.

This occurs with 12.04, 12.10 and 13.04 (daily build from 2/21/2013)
