Microsoft 7000 My Favourite Keys 1-5 not working, only working on 4000 (of which I have both)

Bug Description

(kernel-bug-exists-upstream - :~$ uname -r
3.8.0-030800rc4-generic - updated with new info due to request by another user)

I get this when running sudo /lib/udev/findkeyboards :
USB keyboard: input/event2
USB keyboard: input/event3
USB keyboard: input/js0
USB keyboard: input/mouse0

using:
sudo /lib/udev/keymap -i input/event3

the zoom + and - show up as in another bug as posted here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udev/+bug/356075

scan code: 0xC022D key code: zoomin
scan code: 0xC022E key code: zoomout

but the only other keys that do not show up are extra media programmable buttons 1 2 3 4 5

of which on a previous Microsoft 4000 which is the same keyboard but wired USB work fine under:
keyboard>shortcuts>navigation>
switch to work space 1 = Launch5
switch to work space 2 = Launch6
switch to work space 3 = Launch7
switch to work space 4 = Launch8
switch to work space 5 = Launch9

I have 5 desk top spaces in compiz cubed, so that in the previous Microsoft 4000 keyboard pressing 1 2 3 4 5 would actually just go directly spinning to that desk top, which was obviously very useful. None the less the buttons do not work on the new Wireless 7000 version and doesn't even register with sudo /lib/udev/keymap -i input/event4 (different from the original question post, I have a different mouse plugged in at present)

Here are the results comparing the 2 keyboards first off the 4000 and 2nd the 7000:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1101657/+attachment/3919556/+files/log

As you can see in the 7000 wireless version there is an extra F13 as 183 does not exist in the 4000 wired edition.

It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug report[0]? That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

Please follow the instructions on the wiki page[0]. The first step is to email the appropriate mailing list. If no response is received, then a bug may be opened on bugzilla.kernel.org.

Hi

Yeah I will gather everything needed to run the tests. I have everything on a daily rolling back up so I can always re install 12.10 as that has worked the longest without any re install so far so i kinda left it and was going to upgrade soon.

I will get back to you directly after I have upgraded to the new version of UBUNTU and the latest kernel. At the moment I am fixing my bathroom and have no bath/shower as the floor boards have rotted and installing a new bathroom suit at the same time. so it might be a couple of weeks before i do the tests with UBUNTU

I can confirm the bug in 13.04 and I will report back if the bug is still present in 13.10 when I upgrade over the next week and do further tests.

Just re setting up the NVDIA graphics drivers was, CUMBERSOME and clunky to say the LEAST. I have other things to do before I get to doing all that again but I will do this upgrade and get back to you also I will upgrade to the most recent mainline kernel.

I can confirm this method:
http://shkspr.mobi/blog/2011/12/changing-the-microsoft-4000s-zoom-keys-in-ubuntu/
NO longer works in 13.04 which is very annoying so I will be updating to 13.10 to see if that has been fixed, if not I will be down grading to 12.10.

I will inform you of my findings. sudo evtest /dev/input/event5 with 13.04 still shows up nothing with Favourite Keys 1 - 5 still not working.

Hi
Upgraded to 13.10 and I think successfully filed the error report through 'apport-collect -p linux ' to this bug number etc can you check for me to confirm this was completed successfully?
I updated to the 13.12 kernel but it was only the generic one available and did not work , when signing into the desktop nothing worked, not even ctrl+al+F2 etc etc then the header became a broken package so I had to remove it.
Can you point me in the direction of a low latency version at all?

John

I can confirm this method:
http://shkspr.mobi/blog/2011/12/changing-the-microsoft-4000s-zoom-keys-in-ubuntu/
NO longer works in 13.04 which is very annoying so I will be updating to 13.10 to see if that has been fixed, if not I will be down grading to 12.10.

I will inform you of my findings. sudo evtest /dev/input/event5 with 13.04 still shows up nothing with Favourite Keys 1 - 5 still not working.

John

I can confirm the bug in 13.04 and I will report back if the bug is still present in 13.10 when I upgrade over the next week and do further tests.

Just re setting up the NVDIA graphics drivers was, CUMBERSOME and clunky to say the LEAST. I have other things to do before I get to doing all that again but I will do this upgrade and get back to you also I will upgrade to the most recent mainline kernel.

John

This only works intermittently and I am not sure why

Hi
UBUNTU 13.10 - I can confirm that NO method will allow for the Microsoft 7000 keyboard zoom in zoom out to be changed to page up page down or even scroll up scroll down NOTHING works.

I have had long experience with doing this and in 13.04 I got this to work and in 12.10 it worked, but 13.10 that doesn't work neither do the My Favourite Keys 1-5
all though the zoom in zoom out fader actually showed up in sudo evtest /dev/input/event5
I can confirm that UBUNTU 13.10 the Microsoft 7000 Ergonomic Keyboard's Zoom in and Zoom out does not work it will not through any method work as page up and page down as previously worked in 13.10 and 12.10 also the My Favourites buttons 1-5 still do not work.

If anyone can help with this I would appreciate it, any links to other posts or direct involvement.

Thanks.

As I understand this X can understand up to 255 only and XEV only shows up to 255 and that is ONLY the core of a keyboard with XEV and NOT the multi media buttons of which are above 255 on MOST keyboards.

This is a HUGEEEEEEEEE problem and the best direction I can see to go OTHER than hack work arounds of which I am still trying to develop a method is X input 2 or XI2 as it allows for multi touch and also the remapping of ANY keys regardless of them being 255 or below only, you can just remap whatever you wish with what ever number to whatever function or program.

This needs to be adopted fast!!

Any thoughts on this matter?

j.p.hillier, thank you for your comments. Could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, please just make a comment to this.

If reproducible, could you also please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc6

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Hi

I installed 14.04 before and there was no low latency kernel version, I had tested that kernel before in UBUNTU 13.10 and it would not even allow me to log in.

I had previously updated via the UBUNTU update, from 12.10 to 13.04 then from 13.04 to 13.10. When I installed 14.04 from CD download .iso all my saved Y PPA back ups worked but the actual installed programs from synaptic package manager, when I tried to reinstall from the saved text file via terminal commands or synaptic package manager it failed there was such a long error message that I tried to solve by reading information online it was not fixing broken packages and just wouldn't work.

So I had to re install 13.10 from iso and reinstall all my apps etc I have a rolling back up with Deja Dup on a separate drive in a partition so all my settings and files were put back, this was quite annoying and I do not know why because I have had that for so many versions of UBUNTU and reinstated the Y PPA back up and the APP installs text back with NO troubles whatsoever.

All things said, I have tested the 14.04 version but again there is no low latency kernel for the newest kernel I could find and there are other people out there on forums etc asking the same question.

So I am going to take it so far as I did try.

Until this is completely resolved can someone please help me with this
http://www.thenautilus.net/SW/xf86-input-evdev/
http://www.thenautilus.net/cgit/xf86-input-evdev/
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Remapping_remote_control_key_codes_greater_than_255_#Key_mapping_using_event_key_remap
This seems like the best shot at present it seems that keycodes only go up to 255 and anything above that won't be recognised by X so remapping scancodes to unused keycodes with this semes like the best option.
BUT when I did this
Now restart X (eg reboot the machine or restart gdm etc) and check that the new module is being used:grep evdev_drv /var/log/Xorg.0.logThe output should be something like:(II) Loading /usr/local/lib/xorg/modules/input/evdev_drv.soThis shows that the evdev driver is being loaded from /usr/local/lib, and not /usr/lib.*
Then I ACTUALLY get this read out, after rebooting, and trying and then restarting lightdm from real console
My terminal returns this:
[ 24.802] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/evdev_drv.so
Any help on this would be absolutely fantastic and if this driver could be built into further distributions of LINUX ie UBUNTU then this would be a good start for people being able to remap any keys they wanted to because for sure there are never any keyboards that I know of that uses all 255 keycodes and multi media keys and extra keys are renowned for being above 255
Regards,

John
