Bug Description

Since kernel 3.5.0-17-generic was installed on my system, I had trouble with booting into my system, only 1 of 10 times it bootet correctly.

I had tried to understand the problem and got mislead to the wifi-drivers, but instead it was the btrfs-driver which had problems with the root partition beeing btrfs. I had to hard reset my system several times and ended in complete data loss as the btrfs got corruptet later.

I changed root partition to ext4 now, but I think that bug is interesting to you guys.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.7 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I had tested this with the latest upstream kernel, but I could'nt get apport to file a bug while having the the upstream kernel installed. It was of no change.

Anyway, I do not have the btrfs-filesystem as my root system anymore, since I do have to use the system (even not productive), and while it does not boot, i can't.

Hi,
I had the same issue running Ubuntu 12.10 64bit on a btrfs partition for / and /home. I updated kernel (3.7.0-030700-generic #201212102335 SMP Tue Dec 11 04:36:24 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux) per Joseph's suggestion.

The first reboot, it hung and this was the display text:
***************************
checking battery state -- ok
stopping system V runlevel compatibility -- ok
starting
*****************************

I did a soft power off, and restarted and it worked.

Let me know what other info I can provide.

(fyi apport-collect not working either:
apport-collect 1088185
ERROR: The launchpadlib Python module is not installed. This functionality is not available.)

There is no more information than what I can add here. I installed Ubuntu ver. 12.04LTS (Precise Pangolin) about a week ago (1-August-2013). I used the BTRFS file system. On first re-boot after installation, I was offered 3 choices:

(S)kip -- (I)gnore -- (M)ount Manually.

Selecting skip hung the boot and the OS never loaded.

Selecting the IGNORE for both / and /home (those word or characters do appear on-screen) loads the OS and I have a working computer. Since this problem is at boot time, I believe that the Launchpad Reporting tool-mechanism isn't able to report as it's not loaded.

I am in the habit of closing all the open files, directory folders and applications (e.g., Firefox), before I issue the shutdown command. When the shutdown is issued, the OS seems to unwind itself very quickly - a few seconds only - but the power does not shut down. I have to press the power button a few seconds and the computer is then turned off. I have been doing this about 8 days or so and have not seen another problem. I backup daily.

If you have questions post them to me. I can try to find the kernel.log or whatever, but I don't know where to look or how much to post without your help.
