Bug Description

Recently-installed Ubuntu 12.04 system with all the latest updates.

- Expected -

This issue relates to following product:
Bus 002 Device 015: ID 0546:3304 Polaroid Corp. a500 Digital Camera
"HEDCAM HD WIDE Waterproof Wearable Camcorder"
http://www.hedcamz.com/cameras/hedcam/hedcam-wide

When this device is connected via USB, Ubuntu should automatically recognise it and, ideally, automatically mount the removable MicroSD storage media (4GB). This allows the user to manage the videos created using the device.

- Results -
Communication with the device is not successful, and the following errors are logged to /var/log/syslog.

To note, both Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 and Windows 7 can successfully access the device.

Hal, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please plug in the USB camera into your PC, unplug all other USB devices, execute the following at a terminal, and post the results to this report:
lsusb

As well, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested and remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the text:
needs-upstream-testing

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

As requested, here is the output from lsusb when the HEDCAM camera has been attached. Note that I was unable to remove my wireless mouse and keyboard (Device 003).

Bus 002 Device 015: ID 0546:3304 Polaroid Corp. a500 Digital Camera

When the HEDCAM camera is physically removed, Device 015 does not appear in the lsusb output:

>lsusb

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Bus 002 Device 003: ID 18e3:9106 Fitipower Integrated Technology Inc

Thus, Device 015 "Polaroid Corp. a500 Digital Camera" seems to be the HEDCAM camera.

Out of interest, do you know what "Fitipower Integrated Technology Inc" relates to? Googling this returns details about a webcam, but I don't have a webcam, and I don't believe there is one integrated with my computer as standard.

My system is a Dell Studio XPS 8100. Here is the support site for it, which includes links to the documentation. No integrated camera is mentioned.

I'm sorry, I am not clear which kernel you would like me to try. A link to the actual deb file would be useful.

Christopher,

I have received an email from the director of Hedcams. Is there anything a company like that can do to help with an issue like this, in order to expedite its resolution, or is it typically handled entirely by the developer team?

Thanks

Christopher, would you mind explaining why this would be necessary?

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1067079/comments/55

Anyway, I am afraid that I am not able to use my machine's current installation for testing, for the reasons explained earlier. I hope that the apport submission that I have made using Quantal will be adequate.

Thanks

Yes, I already have A05 installed.

The output of the command is as follows:

# dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
# A05
# 07/08/2010

Hal, my bad. Apparently, I need some glasses. :D Despite this, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc4

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

I have contacted the owner of Hedcamz to ask if he can respond to your last request for information, Christopher. I'd appreciate it if you would keep the ticket open until the bug is actually resolved. Thank you.

Hal, it wouldn't be either Confirmed or In Progress as the latest mainline kernel, now http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.12-rc5-saucy/ , hasn't been tested as previously requested in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1067079/comments/63 .
