Bug Description

Hello

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on an emachines G625 Laptop. But, Ubuntu is only working if an lan caple with internet connection is plugged in.
This means: If the lan cable gets plugged out (and the computer notices this - with showing a disconnect message), the whole system freezes. I can only move the curser, but doing nothing with it or something else (like open a program with the cursor, or with a shortcut).

The problem appears after logging in to the standard ubuntu user interface. The start screen is working without an internet connection.
I can see only the background image after logging in without internet connection.
The same problem appears in the "user defined session".
Ubuntu 2D works without an lan cable connection, and also the console session.
But in Ubuntu 2D, the wireless lan doesn't work. The available connections are displayed, but the computer can not connect.

Before Ubuntu 12.04, i had Ubuntu 10.04 installed on this emachines laptop. 10.04 didn't have this problem.
I installed 12.04 with upgrading 10.04, and also with installing it from an live usb stick and live cd. Nothing makes a different.
The live system also doesn't work without a lan connection.

There's not indication I can find of a freeze in the logs, but that's not particularly surprising.

Regardless, this would be most likely caused by a kernel issue -- reassigning to 'linux'.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.6 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Hello jsalisbury

I installed from your link http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.6-quantal/ the linux-image-3.6.0-030600-generic_3.6.0-030600.201209302035_i386.deb and linux-image-extra-3.6.0-030600-generic_3.6.0-030600.201209302035_i386.deb
but this hasn't any noticable affect on the computer for me (after new starting). The bug is still existing.

Link, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This sounds like an xorg crash as you can still move your mouse. Could you please capture the crash following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSystemCrash ?

Hello penalvch
Sorry, i can't capture the crash. Beginning with that, that the wireless lan isn't working now, and some things more.
I testet the Ubuntu 12.10 on live usb. There the problem also exists.
I think that i will install another distribution on this laptop.

Link, thank you for your comments. As per http://support.emachines.com/em/driver/index.html your BIOS has an upgrade available (1.11). If you update to this, does this change anything?

If not, regarding your comments https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1053022/comments/22 :
"Hello penalvch Sorry, i can't capture the crash."

Could you please specify why specifically you could not capture the crash?

Thank you for mentioning this. Did these problems occur in a release prior to Precise?

>"I testet the Ubuntu 12.10 on live usb. There the problem also exists."

Thank you for testing this.

I reinstalled ubuntu 12.04 (all works correct again, except the lan-cable bug). (There were no prior bugs on the system.)

I was now able to make a ssh connection (before, i had some information deficits to do this).
I captured the error message over a connected other laptop. But i don't know if this is the error message from the sick machine, or just a message, that the connection broke - as impact of pulling out the lan cable of the sick machine, which is the only option to reproduce the crash.
Before i connected over ssh, i deacitvated the lan connection (not the wireless lan connection) over the network manager on the sick machine. I tried to force a wireless connection between the two computers (the connection runs maybe over a router).

I will make the BIOS update in some days with the help of a friend.

by the way: The bug occours also on Fedora 17

Thank you for your help!

Have you checked to see weather the NetworkManager process is still running when this occurs, and if it is not, try plugging the cable back in and restarting NetworkManager. Also check /var/log/syslog.

I am seeing an issue where if I boot my 12.04.1 server with the cable unplugged, NetworkManager dies (it must be repeatedly crashing, because I think upstart tries to restart it). Also, if I unplug the cable while the server is up and then use nmcli to try to start a 3g modem interface, NetworkManager sometimes dies. In both cases, if I plug the cable back in, I can restart NetworkManager.

I can see that there's alot going on here, and I do run scripts that shutdown the interfaces when I update iptables lists, so I'm not sure I can easily provide instructions on how to reproduce this. It may be related to the RealTek 9139 driver.

My hardware is a tiny box with a VIA EDEN chip and RealTek RTL8139 interfaces.

I am in the process of moving, so can't spend alot of time debugging this right now, but will try to provide further information in the coming weeks.
