thanks for the help, all. i agree, my issue may be somewhat different. symptoms, on the surface, are the same, but the root cause is probably different.
an auto-configured xorg.conf with 3d acceleration off fixes the problem for me. that seems like a pretty easy-to-implement fix. i'll make a new bug and post my findings there.
