I'm pretty certain this is an issue with fglrx. I've tried both 8.960 from the quantal repos and a manually-patched 8.98 (12.6) and neither will boot with a 3.5 kernel (whether ppa-mainline or quantal repo). 3.4 works fine (Ubuntu or Liquorix).
