im using ubuntu 10.04 (2.6.32-22-generic) with an asus p5k premium board and can't use the ad-hoc mode

when trying to enable ad-hoc mode with iwconfig it says
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported.
