I too have a Toshiba Satellite R20 and have difficulties with suspend. It originally was turning everything off except the CPU fan and the power lights. I was able to get that fixed with the help of Peter from this bug:

I have not suffered from applications freezing, but I do get a message:
"Sleep Problem: Your computer failed to suspend. Check the help file for common problems."

In dmesg, I have seen a recurring set of messages (which I am unsure if it is related):
APIC error on CPU0: 40(40)
APIC error on CPU1: 40(40)

I am going to continue trying some of the items listed in Debugging ACPI and disabling some hardware drivers to see if that changes things.
