Bug Description

Hello,

I have a Toshiba Satellite R20 tablet pc. Here is the steps to reproduce the bug :

1. Hit the power button, press suspend. The computer will shift to a black screen, and the fan will spin faster. It will keep at this state forever, unless the power button is held for 4 seconds, so it makes a cold boot.

I managed to get a second dmesg.log, after the computer resumed from hibernation, on the buggy state.

update : from some experiences, looks like the network has something directly related to the buggy-state - my samba mounted shares gives I/O errors when I try to ls then!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information.

Please include the information requested at [WWW] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingACPI as separate attachments.

What kernel are you using? As mentioned in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingACPI , you should file this bug in the kernel's package. This is usually " linux-source-2.X.XX ".

I too have a Toshiba Satellite R20 and have difficulties with suspend. It originally was turning everything off except the CPU fan and the power lights. I was able to get that fixed with the help of Peter from this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/139045.

I have not suffered from applications freezing, but I do get a message:
"Sleep Problem: Your computer failed to suspend. Check the help file for common problems."

In dmesg, I have seen a recurring set of messages (which I am unsure if it is related):
APIC error on CPU0: 40(40)
APIC error on CPU1: 40(40)

I am going to continue trying some of the items listed in Debugging ACPI and disabling some hardware drivers to see if that changes things.

Michael,

I had a look around and these 2 links have some very good hints for debugging the suspend

I have updated to Ubuntu 8.04

Good news - Hibernation now works!!

Bug suspend is still at the same state ... :(

description: updated

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

it works now.
The only problem is the network, that won't work after the computer returns from susped, will report another bug for that.
