Additional information that may or may not be useful:

I have an old Dell Dimension XPS T600 with the following set up:
Primary IDE Master 80G Hard Drive
Primary IDE Slave 13G Hard Drive
Secondary IDE Master YAMAHA 8/2/24 CD writer
Secondary IDE Slave TOSHIBA DVD-ROM

In the Device Manager, the CD writer is marked as unknown.
Inserting a disk into this drive has no effect. No auto mount.

DVD-ROM drive is working ok
