The symptoms described are similar to what I and other have experienced, anyhow.
If the original reporter has an ATI graphics adapter and is using the fglrx driver, the problem is that fglrx is having problems with SLUB-enabled kernels (http://lwn.net/Articles/229984/). A workaround is to compile a custom kernel with SLAB enabled instead of SLUB.
