Bug Description

I'm running gutsy tribe-4 on an Intel CHGL30945PM1 laptop. Hibernation works as expected. However, sleep doesn't.

When selecting sleep from the System->Quit menu, the machine goes asleep and the power led blinks indicating that the laptop is sleeping. When pressing on the power button, the machine wakes up but the screen remains black. Even when switching to the other terminals with Ctrl-Alt-F*, the screen remains black.

Could you please try the debugging procedure at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend ? Thanks in advance.

First, when I press on the power button after having suspended, the light of my hard drive blinks a few times indicating the operating system is loading.

Second, here is the output of dmesg after having followed the steps in the DebuggingKernelSuspect wiki page.

Incidentally, has this worked on this machine before?

I have a DELL Latitude D800 (Model PP02X), and I get the exact same problem. It goes to sleep properly, but when I press the power button, I see the HD lights blink and it turns on but the screen remains blank. I know that everything is running properly in the background because if I press CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE, then it returns be back to the login screen. I know this because I recognize the sound that is played when I type in the incorrect password. Pressing FCN-Suspend will also cause it to go back into sleep mode. I can't restore the display for the life of me unless i do a hard reboot. I am running Ubuntu Feisty Fawn.

Tom - This bug report is regarding Gutsy Gibbon, the development release of Ubuntu, and subsequently applies to a different kernel version, 2.6.22, than the version of the kernel you are using. Please submit a new bug report regarding your issue using linux-source-2.6.20 as the source package and provide the information required from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingACPI . Alternatively, if you could test with using the Live CD environment of Gutsy Gibbon, downloadable from http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ , that would be ideal.

We have debugging output as described on the wiki page. Kernel team is this what we need?

We need to know which driver is being used...e.g. the nv xorg driver or the nvidia proprietary xorg driver.

I can confirm this for my Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 5. I am using the nvidia new glx restricted driver installed by the Restricted Drivers Manager. I am able to boot fine. If I enter sleep or let it go to sleep on its own it seems to be fine. Then when I go to wake it up nothing. I can see the hard drive working because my light is flashing. The only way to get it to work is by doing a hard reboot which when starts forces a disk check which fails. Then I have to manually run fsck to have it reset everything. If any other information is required I can submit it. I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 with a nvidia 7300 graphics card.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I am not completely new to Ubuntu but still do not know a lot of the "how to's" but am having the same issue with my Toshiba laptop going to sleep and not waking back up. I am running version 8.10 with kernel 2.6.27. This is the first issue like this. I have not had a single problem with any of the releases I have used since I installed fiesty for my first experience with linux. I do have to hold the power button down and turn the laptop off before I can regain use. The screen is black and nothing will wake it up. I do not even see any disk activity when I try and wake it up.

Hi Rigit,

Care to open a new bug report. It seems you have different hardware than the original bug reporter. Even though you may be experiencing the same symptoms this really is a hardware specific issue. Additionally, the original bug was opened against the Gutsy kernel and it seems you've commented that this is only beginning to appear with the Intrepid kernel. For more information regarding the kernel team bug policy also take a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : Kernel team bugs

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
